THE MOST IMPROVED READER IN THE WORLD!

Well maybe Matthew is not the most improved reader in the entire world but he is the most improved reader in our class. He has gone up six levels on the TPRI Reading Assessment and also improved in words per minute and in his comprehension. That is something that no other student has done this year. Congratulations to Matthew for being such a hard worker and a great reader.

United Way Drive Comes to an End with Hat Day

The United Way Drive came to an end last week with everyone donating a dollar to wear a hat to school. Mrs. Stevens and Mr. Bicknell showed us that they enjoy wearing unusual hats while donating to a worthy cause.

What is a Sequence Ladder?

Our class has been working on improving comprehension skills. We have been brainstorming ideas and writing them down on a sequence ladder. Here is a sample of one we created for the story Jamacia Tag-Along. When we sequence the story we recall important details and improve our comprehension skills.

Election Results are In!

Our unit about the national government could not have come at a better time. One of the things we studied about was how the president is elected. In our classroom Scooby Doo ran against Sponge Bob. We made campaign posters and campaing buttons. We also created lists of the good qualities of both the canidates. On election day each student cast their vote by entering a private voting booth and making their decision.
It was wonderful to see the children thinking about the qualities that make a good president and thoughtfully voting for their choice.

Fireman Visits Second Grade

This week we were very lucky to have Mrs. Simmons' son, a Keller fireman, visit us.
He talked about fire safety and demonstrated his fire fighter equipment. He also asked Cami and Jason to help him show our class how to Stop, Drop, and Roll. They did a great job. Thank you, Mr. Simons, for coming to visit us.

Baby Bunnies Found on Playground

Last week the children found two baby bunnies on the front playground. Mrs. Graves and Mr. Davis rescued the bunnies and moved them to a safe area. The cafeteria ladies provided some lettuce and carrots for a bunny snack. Here is a picture of one of the bunnies after it was relocated to a safe area.

Good Fit Books

We have been learning about "Good Fit Books". We are learning that some books are the perfect fit for us and that not everyone in our class will read the same books.
We've compared shoes and books and talked about different types of shoes. We decided what shoes would be the best fit for a teacher to wear at school. We looked at all different types and sizes of footwear. We talked about how a good fit is important in shoes just like a good fit is important for a book. Here are some of the shoes we talked about. The top picture has the largest and the smallest shoes we looked at, a size 15 house shoe and tiny Polly Pocket doll shoes. The bottom picture shows the many different shoes we talked about. After this lesson we are ready to pick good fit books!

The District’s dress code, at all grade levels, is established to teach grooming and hygiene, instill
discipline, prevent disruption, avoid safety hazards and teach respect for authority. Students
shall be dressed and groomed in a manner that is clean and neat and that will not be a health or
safety hazard to themselves or others.
1. Hair styles and non-natural colors that, in the opinion of the school principal or
principal’s designee, cause a health or safety hazard or cause a disruption of the
education process shall not be permitted. Well-kept beards and mustaches are allowed.
2. All students are expected to wear clothing and undergarments in keeping with their
gender. Undergarments must not be exposed at any time.
3. Tank tops(less than 2 inches), low cut dresses, low cut blouses, blouses that are strapless,
backless, or have spaghetti-type straps, are prohibited.
4. Students may wear shorts, skirts, and dresses provided they are neatly hemmed and
modest in appearance. Specifically prohibited are: cutoffs (of any derivation), pajama
bottoms, form-fitting/skin tight shorts of lycra, spandex, or any other similar material.
The length of shorts, skirts, and dresses are as follows:
Elementary: No higher than fingertip length
Secondary: No higher than 4” from the top of the knee
All shorts are to be without holes and not shredded.
5. Form-fitting/skin tight pants, such as leggings and tights, must be covered with a top
reaching no higher than four inches above the knee for secondary students and no higher
than fingertip length for elementary students.
6. No sagging. Oversized clothing shall not be worn to school or to any BISD function.
Specifically, “bagging or sagging” pants or shorts are prohibited. All pants and shorts
are to be worn at the waist.
7. Pants may not expose the skin above the knee and must be presentable for school. Extra
long belts are prohibited. Belts must be used appropriately.
8. No hats or head coverings (i.e., scarves, bandanas, hoodies) of any kind are to be worn
or brought to school unless approved by the school principal for a special occasion.
Unless there is a medical justification, no sunglasses are to be worn in the building.
9. All students must wear appropriate footwear. Heelies are prohibited. Due to safety
concerns during recess and P.E, elementary students are not allowed to wear flip-flops
during this time.
10. Heavy full-length outerwear, such as “dusters”, trench coats, or Gothic attire, is
prohibited from being worn on campus or school sponsored activities.
11. The wearing of heavy chains or spiked jewelry or “grills” is prohibited. Pierced body
ornaments must be restricted to the ear and appropriate for school.
12. Tattoos (permanent or temporary) must be covered and not visible to others in the
classroom.
13. The length of uniforms for spirit groups such as drill teams, cheerleaders, dance clubs,
etc. shall be consistent with BISD student dress code when these uniforms are worn to
class.
14. Regulations in reference to grooming and dress for each campus, are under the
direction of the principal.
15. The Academy @ Carrie Francis Thomas, the Academy at West Birdville, Birdville
Elementary, and Richland Middle School require the wearing of school uniforms or
standardized dress for all students, as approved by the Campus Site-Based Committee

JPS School Based Clinics

Birdville ISD and JPS have joined together to provide two school based clinics in the district. One is in Haltom City at 2807 Layton Ave. in Haltom City, and the other is on the south side of the Academy at C.F. Thomas at 8200 O’Brian Way in North Richland Hills. The clinic treats students in BISD and their sibling’s ages newborn to 18-years-old for a $5 office charge. Services include: well child visits, sports physicals, acute care, chronic illnesses (asthma, diabetes), immunizations, and much more. The clinic does not have X-ray capabilities or dental services. They see uninsured students or Medicaid that do not have a specified primary care physician. For appointments, call 817.759.2035 (Haltom City) or 817.547.3046 (C.F. Thomas).

Open Enrollment

BISD is accepting OPEN ENROLLMENT transfers of residents and non-residents students. Transfers are considered on a case-by case basis and require approval by the superintendent or his/her designee. Criteria for approval includes good grades, discipline, attendance, and passing all sections of the most recent TAKS or other recognized test if TAKS is not available (kindergarten, second grade, private schools, parochial schools or home schools).BISD will accept applications for grade levels kindergarten (K) -12th grade for schools which have been declared “Open” based on campus capacity. The number of openings for transfer students in grades K-5 is limited. Transfer applications will be processed on a first-come basis. Preference is given to children of BISD full-time employees and students that are already in attendance at the requested campus. All other students will continue to be accepted pending eligibility and available space. There will not be a tuition fee for out-of-district students for the 2008-09 school year; however, this waiver will be reviewed in successive years.Completed applications will be reviewed by an administrator in the office of student services and the campus principal to determine final disposition. Parents will be notified electronically of the status of the application. Once the application has been approved by both the campus principal and student services, the parent should make a copy of the approval and call the individual campus to make arrangements for registration. If an application is denied based on campus/program capacity, the office of student services will assist the parent with options in choosing a campus that has available capacity.
