What's the Best Way to Learn DOL?

This year our class has started to learn The Writer's Secret for the weekly DOL tests in a different kind of way. The class has a competition each week and students must come up with a unique way to remember the Writer's Secret for the DOL test that is given each Friday. In this short video several boys from our class explain The Writer's Secret for ir-regular verbs.

SECOND GRADE SCHOLARS

Here are some candid pictures of our second grade scholars. They don't always sit at their desks. Sometimes they work on the floor and sometimes they work with a partner. The scholars love to learn but they love to have fun too!
One of my favorite pictures is the one of Emily and Katie beacuse they look like they are enjoying learning together.
In case you are wondering the children decided on how they would pose for the pictures.

The Chicken Dance

The boys and girls danced our last chicken dance today!
Every week the children who make 100's and 90's on their
graded papers get to come to the front of the room and
dance with our class chicken. The chicken proclaims that
the students grades are going Up, Up, Up!
Today we danced our last dance for the year.
Take a look at our dancers for this week.

Important BISD Swine Flu Information

Thursday, April 30, 8 a.m. - Birdville ISD does not have any confirmed or suspected cases of swine flu in our schools at this time. The district continues to monitor our campuses. Any decision to close a campus in BISD will be based upon recommendations from the Tarrant County Health Department. As of 8 a.m. on Thursday, April 30, the Tarrant County Health Department reports one confirmed swine flu cases in Tarrant County. This case is a 12-year-old student in Ft. Worth ISD.
In the last couple of days, local and national media sources have been reporting about a growing outbreak of swine flu across our nation. Though the numbers are minimal in relation to the nation's population, the ramifications of a major outbreak are reason for concern.

From Dr. Waddell:

I want to assure you Birdville ISD does not have any confirmed or suspected cases of swine flu in our schools. However, we still take this threat seriously and will continue to monitor our campuses. In addition, the district will continue to monitor this situation through the Tarrant County Health Department.

Any decision to close a campus in BISD will be based upon recommendations from the Tarrant County Health Department. As of 5:40 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, the Tarrant County Health Department reports there are no confirmed swine flu cases in Tarrant County.

Grassland Biome

Our class has been studying about the Grassland Biome in Science. Cami is modeling a buffalo hat. Buffaloes are found in the Grassland Boime. Grassland biomes are large, rolling terrains of grasses, flowers and herbs. Latitude, soil and local climates determine what kinds of plants grow in a particular grassland. A grassland is a region where the average annual precipitation is great enough to support grasses, and in some areas a few trees.

THE MOST IMPROVED READER IN THE WORLD!

Well maybe Matthew is not the most improved reader in the entire world but he is the most improved reader in our class. He has gone up six levels on the TPRI Reading Assessment and also improved in words per minute and in his comprehension. That is something that no other student has done this year. Congratulations to Matthew for being such a hard worker and a great reader.

What is a Sequence Ladder?

Our class has been working on improving comprehension skills. We have been brainstorming ideas and writing them down on a sequence ladder. Here is a sample of one we created for the story Jamacia Tag-Along. When we sequence the story we recall important details and improve our comprehension skills.

Fall Pumpkins!

If you have not seen our fall bulliten board please try to come by
and see it before December arrives. We have had many compliments
on how cute all the children look!

Election Results are In!

Our unit about the national government could not have come at a better time. One of the things we studied about was how the president is elected. In our classroom Scooby Doo ran against Sponge Bob. We made campaign posters and campaing buttons. We also created lists of the good qualities of both the canidates. On election day each student cast their vote by entering a private voting booth and making their decision.
It was wonderful to see the children thinking about the qualities that make a good president and thoughtfully voting for their choice.

This week we were very lucky to have Mrs. Simmons' son, a Keller fireman, visit us.
He talked about fire safety and demonstrated his fire fighter equipment. He also asked Cami and Jason to help him show our class how to Stop, Drop, and Roll. They did a great job. Thank you, Mr. Simons, for coming to visit us.

Good Fit Books

We have been learning about "Good Fit Books". We are learning that some books are the perfect fit for us and that not everyone in our class will read the same books.
We've compared shoes and books and talked about different types of shoes. We decided what shoes would be the best fit for a teacher to wear at school. We looked at all different types and sizes of footwear. We talked about how a good fit is important in shoes just like a good fit is important for a book. Here are some of the shoes we talked about. The top picture has the largest and the smallest shoes we looked at, a size 15 house shoe and tiny Polly Pocket doll shoes. The bottom picture shows the many different shoes we talked about. After this lesson we are ready to pick good fit books!

My Pet Dragon paper

Our first attempt at writing was a story called My Pet Dragon. The story went along with the second story in our reading book, titled Henry and Mudge. In the story Henry gets a dog as a pet. The first picture shows the way to publish a story. The second picture shows a student with his idea paper before he wrote his story.
The class did an outstanding job with their first pieces of writing.

Fluency Folder Information

This is a sample of the inside of the Fluency Folder. It is required reading in second grade. All students must read with a parent every night. Parents record the information for the week. The yellow folders are turned in for a grade every Friday. Since starting this homework program students' fluency rates have improved and they have become better readers.

Reading Vocabulary

This is a sample of a reading vocabulary page that your child should study every Thursday for the Reading test on Friday. Vocabulary books should go home with your child every Thursday. Ecah week we use a new page. We put the title of the story for the week at the top of the page and then we look up the meaning of the six vocabulary words and write them down.
